چکیده
Travellers may be exposed to a wide range of different air pollutants during their journeys. In this study, personal exposures within vehicles and active travel were tested in real-world conditions across nine transport modes on journeys from London Paddington Oxford City Centre, the United Kingdom. The covered cycling, walking, buses, coaches, trains private cars. Such are relevant questions traveller comfort safety context airborne diseases such as COVID-19 growing awareness health, productivity effects interior quality. Pollutants measured particle number (PN), mass (PM), carbon dioxide (CO2) speciated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), using devices carried or with traveller, pumped sampling. Whilst only relatively small assessed—inviting future work assess statistical significance—the current study highlights where particular focus exposure reduction should placed. Real-time results showed that dominated by short-term spikes ambient concentrations, when standing train platform, at roadside. size distribution particles varied significantly according situation. On average, coach created highest overall; had mixed performance, while cars typically lowest exposures. Sources included both combustion products entering vehicle care other passengers, which judged desk research most likely source each individual compound. Although more exhaust emissions walking benefit rapid dilution these open air. An important variable determining total was journey length, speed car advantageous compared relative slowness coach.

Catalytic Oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds and Malodorous Organic Compounds
This thesis describes efforts made on the development of an existing catalytic incinerator. The development work, called process characterization, consists of four general parts. These are the development of measurement methodology, the studying of construction materials, the selection of suitable catalysts and the testing of the effects of process operation conditions. The two application area...
متن کاملVolatile Organic Compounds Contribute to Airway Hyperresponsiveness
BACKGROUND Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in concentrations found in both the work and home environments may influence lung function. We investigated the prevalence of airway responsiveness in workers exposed to VOCs. METHODS We used allergic skin tests, nonspecific airway hyperresponsiveness testing and questionnaires to study twenty exposed workers and twenty-seven control subjects. Atop...
متن کاملVolatile Organic Compounds in Uremia
BACKGROUND Although "uremic fetor" has long been felt to be diagnostic of renal failure, the compounds exhaled in uremia remain largely unknown so far. The present work investigates whether breath analysis by ion mobility spectrometry can be used for the identification of volatile organic compounds retained in uremia. METHODS Breath analysis was performed in 28 adults with an eGFR ≥ 60 ml/min...
متن کاملMeasurement of Volatile Organic Compounds
To answer critical questions regarding the interactions between green plants and air quality, two three-year projects are underway to investigate emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from selected plant species. These biogenic VOC (BVOC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) can react in the lower atmosphere in the presence of sunlight to form ozone and secondary particulate matter, the principa...
متن کاملAllocating city space to multiple transportation modes:
A macroscopic modeling approach is proposed for allocating a city’s road space among competing transport modes. In this approach, a city or neighborhood street network is viewed as a reservoir with aggregated traffic. Taking the number of vehicles (accumulation) in a reservoir as input, we show how one can reliably predict system performance in terms of person and vehicle hours spent in the sys...
